Abstract :
National education not only aims to make students intellectually intelligent, but education also
aims to make students socially intelligent and with character. The formulation of the character
problem in this research is the role of Islamic Religious Education teachers in shaping the character
of santri and what obstacles Islamic Religious Education teachers face in forming the character of
santri. The role of the Islamic Religious Education teacher will describe the behavior patterns that
will be expected in the interactions between students and teachers. Thus, madrasas as Islamic
educational institutions have the task of not only educating but also forming character in students.
This type of research is Descriptive Qualitative Research. The data collection instruments used
were observation, interviews and documentation. The data sources obtained from informants were
Islamic Religious Education teachers, Class VIII students and the Head of Madrasah Tsanawiyah
Umar Zahid, Perak District, Jombang Regency.
The results of research carried out at the Umar Zahid Tsanawiyah Madrasah, Perak District,
Jombang Regency, found that the role of Islamic Religious Education teachers in shaping the
character of students at the Tsanawiyah Madrasah is: the role as model and role model, mentor,
director and evaluator. The obstacles for Islamic Religious Education teachers in forming the
character of students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Umar Zahid, Perak District, Jombang Regency, are
internal factors and external factors, where the internal factor is the students' lack of interest in
learning. while external factors are unsupportive background, madrasah environment, community
environment and lack of facilities and infrastructure.
