The purpose of this study was to find out how far the increase in the ability to speak
English students of second grade students of SMA Swasta Katolik Warta Bakti Kefamenanu of
the Year 2020/2021, through and to examine the situation in the classroom when the retelling
short story applied to the class speaks English in the second grade of SMA Swasta Katolik Warta
Bakti Kefamenanuof the year 2020/2021. This research aims to determine whether or not there
is the use of retelling short stories improve students‟ speaking skills and to find out the effect
size of the improvement students‟ speaking skills after being taught using the tenth short story
with a one by one test design. This population in this research, students of XI SMA Swasta
Katolik Warta Bakti Kefamenanu, while the sample is class XI BAHASA which consists 9
(nine) students. The result showed that the average score level of the students is 2,75 while the
average value of the aspect of speaking is 3,11. It shows that retelling short stories improve the
students‟ speaking skills. The results showed that telling short stories could also improve
speaking skills. It can be concluded that there is a very significant influence retell short stories to
improve students‟ speaking skills in second grade SMA Swasta Katolik Warta Bakti
Kefamenanu in the school year 2020/2021
