Abstract :
Composite is a combination of two or more materials that have different properties, the difference can be seen from the two main elements, namely fiber as a filler and fiber binder called the matrix. This study used hemp fiber with a polyester resin matrix and a catalyst as a binder. Treatment of flax fiber by soaking in 5% alkaline solution (NaOH) for 60 minutes to remove lignin adhering to the fiber. Composite printing method with hand lay-up. The matrix used in this research is polyester resin. The composition of hemp fiber with polyester resin is 4% : 96%, 8% : 92% and 12% : 88%. The mechanical properties tested are tensile strength. The tensile test refers to the ASTM D638 type 1 standard. The test results obtained the highest tensile strength in the specimen with a composition of 12% which has a stress of 48.33 MPa and a strain of 3.951%, the modulus of elasticity is 2.943 GPa. The specimen with 8% composition had a stress of 41.88 MPa and a strain of 2.816% on a composite with an elastic modulus of 2.859 GPa. Specimen with a composition of 4% has a stress of 23.24 MPa and a strain of 1.665 with an elastic modulus of 2.290 GPa. The results of the physical properties test showed: the physical properties of the hemp fiber composite polyester matrix had an average density of 1.21 g/cm3, the percentage of water absorption was 3.82% on average and the proportion of swelling (swelling) was on average 0.93%. These physical properties are included in the JIS A5908 classification.
