Abstract :
4340 steel is a medium carbon, low alloy steel known for its toughness and strength in relatively large sections. 4340 Steel is known as HSLA (High Strength Low Alloy) material. This material belongs to medium carbon steel with low alloy Ni-Cr and Mo. 4340 steel has good properties in terms of impact resistance and abrasion resistance. Bushings made from 4340 steel are processed using a surface heat treatment method (plasma nitriding) with different temperature variations. The purpose of doing this temperature variation is to determine the difference in mechanical properties in the form of roughness and toughness values of 4340 carbon steel, so that we can determine the value of the roughness test and microstructure of the nitriding plasma layer. The temperature variations used are 350°C, 420°C and 500°C. Results The roughness value obtained at a temperature of 350°C is 1,437 m, for a temperature of 420°C the roughness is 1,877 m, while at a temperature of 500°C the roughness is 2,034 m. The microstructures formed at a nitriding plasma temperature of 350°C are austenite and bainite, as well as at 420°C and 500°C the microstructures that occur are still dominated by austenite and bainite. Keywords: 4340 steel, Plasma nitriding process, roughness value, microstructure
