Abstract :
Racial prejudice is known as the wrong assessment in society which is done by particular group towards other groups based on visual appearance. This study focuses on the portrayal of discrimination that occurs as the result of racial prejudice which is addressed to African-American people or the Black people in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The purpose of this study is to describe the portrayal of racial prejudice for African-American people and to analyze the discrimination as the result of racial prejudice in the novel.
This study was under descriptive qualitative method. It uses two data called primary data and secondary data. The primary data was taken from the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Meanwhile, the secondary data were taken from other sources, such as international journals, articles, thesis, essays, and e-magazines. The data gathered by reading the novel To Kill A Mockingbird for several times highlight some important parts.
The result of this study showed two important points. They are the portrayal of racial prejudice for African-American people in the novel, and discrimination as the result of racial prejudice in the novel. First, there are some practices of racial prejudices which are done by White people toward the Black people, and discrimination as the result of racial prejudice which is done by many characters toward the Black people.
