Abstract :
Proxmox Virtual Environment (PVE) is a virtual machine operating system that is starting to be widely used by users of virtualization technology. Proxmox VE supports two types of virtualization, namely Linux Container-based virtualization (LXC) and full virtualization with Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM). Proxmox VE supports Network Attached Storage (NAS). NAS is a server with an operating system that is devoted to serving the needs of data files. Based on a survey conducted by Linuxhint.com, the most popular NAS operating systems in 2020 are Synology and FreeNAS, Synology NAS ranks first for Best Linux Friendly NAS while FreeNAS ranks first for Best Open Source NAS. The Synology operating system uses B-Tree File System (BTRFS) technology as its storage mechanism, while the FreeNAS operating system uses Z File System (ZFS) technology. Based on previous research, no one has implemented and compared the performance of other NAS types on Proxmox VE servers, previous research only focused on implementing the type of network attached storage using FreeNAS, one of the network attached storage that can be applied besides FreeNAS is Synology, in addition to previous research no one has tested NAS performance on Proxmox VE servers yet in the face of attacks. Based on these problems, the researcher wishes to conduct research on Comparative Analysis of Network Attached Storage (NAS) performance using Synology and FreeNAS as storage media on Proxmox VE. The parameters to be analyzed are divided into 2, namely the first analysis in terms of NAS operating system performance related to the upload process speed, VM and Container creation, VM and Container running speed, backup speed, restore speed and clone speed on Proxmox VE. The second analysis from the security side aims to analyze the performance of Synology and FreeNAS storage media in the face of attacks, while the attack used is Denial of Service attack (DOS). This study uses the Network Development Life Cycle (NDLC) methodology. Of the 6 (six) stages, this research only uses 3 (three) stages, namely Analysis, Design and Simulation Prototyping. The conclusion of this study is that Synology storage media is superior to FreeNAS storage media. Synology storage media excels in operating system performance scenarios and NAS storage media performance scenarios, whether it's when the storage media is in normal condition or when it gets a DoS attack.
