Abstract :
There are many problems faced by high school students in learning English, especially in speaking skills. In the fact shows that self confidence becomes main problem in student?s speaking skills mastery. Students are afraid of being mistakes when they want to speak English. Morever, they feel discouraged when they want to start to speak English because they do not have idea. They also don?t have chance to practice speaking English. Therefore, teacher should find an appropriate strategy to empower student?s self confidence. Role play is the appropriate technique to empower student?s self-confidence in speaking English. It gives students opportunity to practice communicating English. The purpose of the research is to describe how the teacher?s strategy empowers student?s self confidence through role play.This research used descriptive qualitative research with the subject is a teacher and students in one of high schools in Kediri. This research found that through steps of role play, the student?s self confidence can be empowered. Teacher gave strartegies in each step of role play. By passing the steps of role play: linguistic preparation, situational and functional preparation, role play design, and follow up, the students are more confident in speaking English. It proves when the students performed role play with their friends. The indicators of self confidence appeared and they are more relax in speaking English.
