Abstract :
The mangrove ecosystem in the Banyuasin Estuary and the Musi Estuary has a wide area coverage in South Sumatera. Monitoring of density mangrove vegetation canopy in the Banyuasin Estuary and the Musi Estuary through with the LAI (Leaf Area Index) using remote sensing data closely related with field mangrove canopy. The research purposed to map the distribution of mangrove vegetation canopy and analyze the distribution and density of mangrove canopy with integration of remote sensing data and LAI. This research was conducted in November - December 2018 using Landsat image-7 year 2008, Landsat image-8 year 2013 and year 2018. The results indicated that the distribution area of mangrove in 2008, 2013 and 2018 were 27,417.6 ha; 26,095.32 ha; and 22,604.04 ha. The coefficient of determination between NDVI value with LAI value of canopy cover in field of R2 = 0,5591 indicated the correlation had quite high relationship. The map accuration was of 70% indicated a good accuration. The NDVI image map integration map with LAI result in 4 mangrove canopy density classes consisted of very dense canopy, dense canopy, the medium canopy and rare canopy. Area coverage in Banyuasin Estuary was 18,116.37 ha and area coverage in Musi Estuary was 4,487.67 ha. The mangrove canopy cover category in Banyuasin Estuary dominated by a very dense canopy with percentage cover was 48.54% and in Musi Estuary dominated by dense canopy with percentage cover was 82.76%.
