Abstract :
Background: Enterococcus faecalis is a microorganism that has a high survival ability in some cases of failed root canal treatment. Controlling endodontic microorganisms assisted with commonly-used chemical irrigation materials can cause side effects in patients, thus natural irrigation materials begin to be investigated considering for their infamous biocompatible benefit. Curcuma zedoaria is one of the natural medicinal plants which has some antibacterial properties known to be effective against several types of microorganisms. Objective: To know the comparison of antibacterial potency from various concentrations of Curcuma zedoaria rhizome extract against Enterococcus faecalis bacteria. Methods: This quasi experimental study had 32 samples divided into 8 groups, i.e. C. zedoaria extract of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 100% concentrations; chlorhexidine 2%; and aquadest. The suspension of E. faecalis was added with aquadest according to 0.5 McFarland's standard, then was scratched on Müller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. Eight wells were made on the media and dropped with 0.5 ?L of each test material before incubated at 37? for 24 hours. The visible inhibitory zone diameters were measured using a sliding caliper, then the data was analyzed by One-Way ANOVA test, followed by Bonferroni post hoc test. Results: The largest inhibitory zone diameter within the concentrations was shown by extract with 100% concentration with the mean of 8.36 mm. Conclusion: Curcuma zedoaria rhizome extract with high concentration had an effective anti bacterial potency than extract with lower concentrations. Extract with 60% concentration was considered as the most effective minimum concentration, since it showed no significance difference with 100% concentration.
