Abstract :
VERTICAL SOCIAL MOBILITY OF RUBBER FARMERS TO GOLD MINERS IN MUARA KUAMANG VILLAGE, PELEPAT ILIR SUB-DISTRICT, BUNGO DISTRICT, JAMBI PROVINCE. This research examines the problem of vertical social mobility of rubber farmers to gold miners in Muara Kuamang Village, Pelepat Ilir Sub-district, Bungo Regency, Jambi Province. The purpose of this study was to understand the form of vertical social mobility and the factors that motivate rubber farmers to carry out mobility in Muara Kuamang village. The method used is a qualitative research method with a case study research strategy. The theory used in this research is Pitrim Sorokin's social mobility theory. Determination of informants was done purposively. Data collection in this study was carried out using interview, observation and documentation techniques with ten (10) main informants and two (2) supporting informants. The results showed that 8 informants experienced upward vertical mobility (social climbing) changes that occurred in increasing income, showing economic ability by building houses and buying new vehicles, and being able to pay for their children's education. 2 informants were identified as experiencing downward vertical social mobility (social sinking). Informants resold gold mining machines (dompeng), and got into debt. The factors that encourage farmers to carry out vertical mobility are individual factors, namely the desire to mobilize because they see other people getting rich after working as gold miners. Second, economic factors and third, family background factors.
