Abstract :
Background: Students must be able to adapt to the transition from high school to college to avoid stress. As a result of stress, para-functional habits could develop which lead to trauma. One of the disorders related to stress and trauma was Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS). RAS was a disorder characterized by recurrent benign ulcers, rounded in shape with an erythematous halo, and only on oral mucosa without signs of other systemic diseases. Predisposing factors for RAS were stress, trauma, hormonal, genetic, and nutritional deficiencies. The purpose of this study was to describe the history of RAS in preclinical students of dentistry at Sriwijaya University and its predisposing factors. Methods: This research was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. There were 184 female respondents from classes 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. This study used a questionnaire consisting of 21 questions filled out via Google Forms. The data were analyzed using the Chi Square test. Results: The history of RAS in class 2019 was 20.7%, 15.2% in 2020, 10.3% in 2021, and 8.2% in 2022. The most predisposing factors were stress (67.9%), trauma (61.4%), menstrual cycle (52.2%), and genetics (35.3%). Chi Square test results showed no significant relationship. Conclusion: 2019 had the most history of RAS with stress as the most dominant predisposing factor, there was no relationship between the year of study, history of RAS and predisposing factors of RAS. Keywords: recurrent aphthous stomatitis, year of study
