Abstract :
Background: One of the complications of tooth extraction was dry socket or alveolar osteitis, caused by Streptococcus mutans. The infection following tooth extraction could be reduced by providing adequate antibiotics and mouthwashes. Ambon banana peel could be utilized as an antibacterial due to its content of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids which inhibited bacterial growth. Objective: The purpose of this study aimed to find out the antibacterial potency of ethanol extract of ambon banana peel (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) against Streptococcus mutans. Method: This study was an in vitro laboratory experimental study. The test group used ethanol extract of ambon banana peel with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% obtained by soxhletation method, 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate was used as a positive control and aquades as a negative control. The antibacterial potency was tested using the disc diffusion method to determine the value of the inhibition zone, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) using the broth dilution method, and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) using the solid dilution method. The inhibition zone values then were analyzed statistically using one way ANOVA and Post Hoc Tukey tests. Results: This study revealed that the 100% concentration of ethanol extract of Ambon banana peel had the average inhibition zone value of 20.10 mm, but smaller than 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate. The MIC and MBC tests for the ethanol extract of Ambon banana peel were determined at a concentration of 50%. Conclusion: The ethanol extract of Ambon banana peel (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) had antibacterial activity on Streptococcus mutans.
