Abstract :
This research aims to analyze Xi Jinping's idiosyncrasies as an individual state leader and recognize how those have influenced China's new approach to international relations through the particular ?Major Country Diplomacy? foreign policy. This policy demands attention as it marks a significant departure from China's long-standing low-profile foreign policy approach before Xi's ascent to power. Using the concept of Foreign Policy combined with the theoretical framework of the Idiosyncratic Approach by John T Rourke and employing a qualitative descriptive methodology to analyze the available literature and data related to Xi's individual traits, the research findings highlight that although Xi's idiosyncrasies are not the sole driving force behind China's foreign policy shift, they undoubtedly wield considerable influence; particularly given Xi's supreme and centralized decision-making power in today's China. Each of Xi's idiosyncratic factors, such as his personality (ambitious, nationalistic, confident, assertive, and pragmatic, followed by his active-positive presidential style), health (high security-consciousness and vulnerability), ego (high self-pride), ambition (strong need for power and influence), political history (experiences as a grassroots leader with high mobility). personal experiences (family background and experiences during the Cultural Revolution). perception (the goal of achieving the 'Chinese Dream' and restoring China's historical role as a global power), and operational reality (disfavor of the current Western-led international system and envisioning a more equitable and fair international system), have their own implied influence on his decisions in making China a prominent global power through ?Major Country Diplomacy?, with a more assertive and proactive approach towards foreign affairs than all of Xi's predecessors after Mao Zedong.
