Abstract :
Microalgae Chlorella sp. contains phenolic secondary metabolites and carotenoids which have antioxidant activity. Previous studies reported that many of the chemical components of Chlorella such as phenolic compounds, ?-carotene, ascorbic acid and tocopherols exhibit antioxidant properties. In this study the aim was to measure the phenolic and carotenoid content of the microalgae Chlorella sp. Antioxidant activity test was carried out in vitro with the DPPH and FRAP methods. Based on the research results, it was found that the carotenoid compound ?-carotene of Microalgae Chlorella sp. of 1.907 mg/mL. The content of phenolic compounds consisting of total phenols and total flavonoids contained in the ethanol extract of microalgae Chlorella sp. respectively were 8.60 mgGAE/g and 34.61 mgQE/g. The IC50 from the FRAP method was 977.772 µg/mL, greater than the IC50 from the DPPH method with 201.408 µg/mL. Based on its mechanism of counteracting free radicals by giving hydrogen atoms to free radicals, the DPPH method is more appropriate for use in determining the antioxidant activity contained in the extract of the microalgae Chlorella sp. From the two methods used to test the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of Chlorella sp., it can be seen that there is a significant difference in the results, namely the IC50 results. The DPPH method gives better results than the FRAP method.
