Abstract :
Introduction. Executive function was part of a high-cognitive process that plays part in goal-related behavior and problem-solving ability and thus is closely related to personal achievement. There were a lot of studies done to find out the effects of physical activity on executive function; however, there were some studies with contradictory results. Moreover, there were no studies performed to assess the effect of single bout exercise toward the cognitive performance of Indonesian athletic students. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the effect of physical activity towards executive function on martial arts students of Sekolah Olahraga Negeri Sriwijaya Palembang. Method. This analytical observational study compared Stroop test performance before and after the observation. Observation conducted in three days while subjects performed low, moderate, and high-intensity exercise program designed by the coach. The population of this study involving 32 students partaking on wrestling, Judo, Taek Kwon Do and Pencak Silat. Result. Through pairwise comparison analysis on data collected from 21 samples, it was found that low-intensity exercise had the greatest mean difference of Stroop test score with p=0.015 compared to the mean differences of moderate-intensity exercise (p=0.873) and high-intensity exercise (p=0.326). Conclusion. Only low-intensity exercise has a significant effect on executive function.
