Abstract :
Background: Allergic rhinitis is a multifactorial disease that involves genetic and environmental factors. The environmental factors that trigger allergic rhinitis are allergens such as house dust mites (HDM), animal skin flakes, cockroaches, mold, and pollutants. Contact with mites can be seen from the possession of goods which are generally the place where mites live. HDM allergens can generally be found on fur dolls, fur rugs, fur blankets, cotton mattresses, foam mattresses, pillows and bolsters, air conditioners (AC), and linen. This research aims to determine the association between risk factors for inhalant allergens and the prevalence of allergic rhinitis. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study using the International Asthma and Allergy in Chidhood (ISAAC) questionnaire on second grade student age 13-14 years at 9 Junior High School of Kemuning District from September to December 2019. Results: Among 283 subjects included, the prevalence of allergic rhinitis was 23.7%. Risk factors such as family history of atopy (p = 0.000), inhalant allergens HDM exposure from fur dolls (p = 0.000), fur rugs (p = 0.002), fur blankets (p = 0.000), cotton mattresses (p = 0.003), foam mattresses (p = 0.001), pillows and bolsters (p = 0.020), AC (p = 0.022), and linen (p = 0.010), contact with dogs and/or cats (p = 0,000), cockroaches (p = 0.022), molds (p = 0.004) and pollutants from burning waste (p = 0.022) and cigarettes (p = 0.008) were significantly associated to with allergic rhinitis. Conclusion: There is significant association between allergic rhinitis and inhalant exposure: HDM exposure such as possession of fur dolls, fur rugs, fur blankets, cotton mattresses, foam mattresses, pillows and bolsters, air conditioners, bedsheets, cat/dog dander exposure, cockroaches, molds, pollutants from garbage burning and cigarette smoking.
