Abstract :
This research took place in Koto Lamo Village, Kapur IX Subdistrict, Lima
Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatera with an area of 81 km2. This research mainly purposed to identify the geological characteristic such as geomorphology, stratigraphy, structural geology and identification of the coal seam. The method used in this research is literature study, surface mapping, laboratory analysis and data processing. Geomorphology in the study area can be divided into four geomorphological units, namely Perbukitan Tinggi Denudasional, Perbukitan Denudasional, Punggungan and Kanal Sungai. The deformation that occurred in study area was reverse right lateral strike-slip fault. The stratigraphy in the study area is divided into two unit which is Kuantan Formation with slate and Menggala Formation with sandstone. Coal was found as an insert on Menggala Formation that has black physical characteristics with black scratches, dul to brightl, the hardness is moderate, fragments of sheets, with coalseam thickness ranging from 0.2-0.9 meters. The characteristic of the coal in study area has low moisture, high content of ash, high volatile matter and high fixed carbon. The coal in study area is classified into bituminous high volatile according to classification of ASTM (1998) modified by Ibrahim et al (2017). The geological history in the study area began at the deposition of Kuantan Formation on Pra-Tertiary, this deposition gone through a long time process affected by pressure and temperature which change the sediment into metamorphic rock. And the depositional of Menggala Formation occured on early Miocene. Regional compression result in lifting of Barisan Mountains and the erosion on Menggala Formation and so the Kuantan Formation is exposed to the surface.
