Abstract :
Tarakan Formation at the Tarakan Sub-basin as a part of the Tarakan Basin is the target
area of this study. The Tarakan Formation is composed of sandstones, flakes and coal.
In this case, coal is a source rock and also a reservoir of Coal Bed Methane (CBM).
This research uses 3D PSTM (Post-Stack Time Migration) seismic data and 1 well (NI
well) data. To identify the prospect of CBM distribution, the seismic inversion method
has conducted using a model-based type of acoustic impedance inversion. This modelbased inversion uses a soft constraint technique with a high correlation between
synthetic seismogram and actual seismic in rate number 0,97312 and an error rate
0,236786. The inversion produces an acoustic impedance distribution map showing
possibility of the coal reservoir distribution prospect from CBM in the target zone. The
inversion results show that the coal reservoir is at a low acoustic impedance to its
surroundings, ranging from 2100-5900 (m/s)*)(g/cc) around the NI well in the target
zone located at 190 ms below the Tarakan Formation.
