Abstract :
The research objective was to test the perfomance of biomass briquette
using portable downdraft gasifier. The study was conducted from October to
November 2017 at the workshop (BLK) Kenten Sako Agriculture, South Sumatra
Province and Department of Energy and Mineral Resources Laboratory of South
Sumatera Province and Department of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of
Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The method used in this research was
experimental which consist of raw materials A1 (acasia sawdust of 75%), A2
(sengon sawdust of 75%), A3 (gelam wood bark of 75%) and cassava skin as
adhesive agent of 25%. The observed parameters were water content,
hygroscopic property, ash content, calorific value, initial ignition time and
briquette combustion rate. The results showed that the A1 treatment (briquette of
acasia sawdust) had the lowest water content, hygroscopic and ash content of
6.75%, 2.38% and 0.98% respectively, while the A3 treatment (briquette of gelam
wood bark) has the highest calorific value of 4698 kg.h-1, the fastest initial
ignition time of 0.71 minutes and the lowest combustion rate of 0.00148 kg.h-1.
However, the calorific value for each briquette had not fulfilled standard of SNI
No.1/6235/2000 with magnitude of 5000 cal.g-1. Based on the results, it is argent
to conduct further study in order to improve calorific value of briquette and
produce less smoke combined with bluish flame color.
Key words : briquette, acasia sawdust, sengon sawdust, gelam wood bark.
