Abstract :
This study is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Writing Descriptive Text Based on the Picture of the Eight Grade Students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the School Year 2017/2018â€. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1. Are the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph in the school year of 2017/20218 able to write desciptive text based on the picture given? 2. What is the level of ability in writing descriptive text of the eighth grade students of SMPK St, Yoseph Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 ? 3. What are the areas of difficulities faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the School Year 2017/2018 in writing descriptive text based on the picture given? Whereas the objective of the study are as follows: 1) To find out if the eighth grade students in the school year 2017/2018 able to write descriptive text based on the picture 2) . To find out the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in writing descriptive text.3) To find out the areas of difficulties of the eighth grade students in the school year 2017/2018 in writing descriptive text. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to explain the situation which is observed while this research is done. The study was conducted at SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang. The subjects of the study was 20 students of the eighth grade specially class VIII C. The collected data were analyzedon four aspects of writing, they are grammar, vocabulary, mechanics and content. The result of this study shows the following 1) The eighth grade student of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 were able to write descriptive text based on the picture.2) The level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the School Year 2017/2018 in writing descriptive text was 13.8 classified as “Above Averageâ€. The problems faced by the students were on grammar especially use of ungrammatical error, the , and in a sentence the students combine noun and verb verb (I’m so like), wrong vocabulary, the problems by the students were on mechanics especially the use of punctuation and spelling words and in content students sometimes they did not describe agree with the picture given. These scores were given by using analytic method offered by John Anderson. Besidestheresult of the analysis indicated that,two students got below average ability level, one student got average ability level, six students got above average ability level, ten students got very good ability level and one student got excellent ability level. Therefore the writer suggests the following: 1) The English teacher should pay attention to the grammatical aspects such as the use of article, word order and tenses because many errors occurred in those aspects. 2) The English teacher should encourage the students to have sufficient stock of English vocabulary. Some students still faced difficulties dealing with the content and the language use in the generic structure of the text. 3) The English teacher should pay attention to the mechanics aspect such as the punctuations and spelling of the words because some students are still confused how to put the punctuation correctly.
