Abstract :
The data were categorized into three types of the dependent clause as suggested by Verspoor and Sauter (2000, p.35). The finding shows that the clauses functioning as subject, object, and subject or object attribute becomes the most frequent type in The Secret (47%). It is followed by the use of the clauses functioning as modifier of noun (27%) and the clauses functioning as adverbial (26%). In terms of translation procedures, there are two results in this study. First, 6% of complex sentences (the position of dependent and independent clause) are transferred into the new sentence construction in TL and the other 94% are translated as the original version. Second, in relation to the theory proposed by Newmark (1988), there were 10 translation procedures applied in translating the complex sentence, namely transposition (24,57%), literal (24%), couplet (15,43%), paraphrase (12%), reduction (8%), synonymy (5,14%), semantic (4,57%), expansion (4%), through translation (1,71%) and cultural equivalent (0,57%). Transposition procedure is the most frequent procedure used in translating the complex sentences in quotations. In addition, most of complex sentence translations are appropriate and acceptable. It covers the factors of translation judgment namely accuracy, clarity, and naturalness (Larson, 1984). In this study, it is only found 23 cases (26%) that were not translated well by the translator. However, the translation versions still can be categorized as good translation. It is recommended that further study be conducted to focus more on the procedure of translation on other types of sentence.
