A SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION IN SURAH AD-DUKHAN

Abstract :
In general, the focus of the syntax is to analyze text or discourse. However, in this study wanted to make something different especially on this campus by analyzing the English translation of Surah by using one of syntactic analysis theory. Syntax is a branch of linguistics that addresses the internal structure of sentences, such as phrases, clauses and sentences. Tree Diagram is one of the popular theory of syntactic analysis and easier to see the phrases and part of speech. In general, Tree Diagrams are sentence analysis by using hierarchical structure of sentences as generate by set of rules. In analyzing the data used Tree Diagram theory proposed by Noam Chomsky is used to analyze sentence of the content of the sentence. This study chooses Surah Ad-Dukhan as object to be analyzed using tree diagrams. Surah Ad-Dukhan is the 44th surah of the Holy Quran. Surah Ad-Dukhan is classified as ?makkiyah? which consists of 59 verses. The method of this study is descriptive-qualitative research to analyze and get the obtained data which is the syntactic analysis on English translation of Surah Ad-Dukhan. The collection method of this study is documentation. This research is classified the patterns of the sentence containing in every verse of Surah Ad-Dukhan. The steps of analyzed the data (1) taking and collecting every verses of Surah Ad-Dukhan (2) re-type every verses of Surah Ad-Dukhan in note book (3) make a syntactic analysis using tree diagram in every verses (4) determine the formula of the diagram and the pattern of the sentence (5) make conclusions from the result of the analysis. The result of this study shows Surah Ad-Dukhan consists of 59 verses with 33 of syntactic structures, where 24 belong to sentence patterns and 9 belong to phrase structures. The sentence patterns consist of 24 kinds of the diagram formula. The phrase structure consists of 9 kinds of the diagram formula that include 1 formula of NP, 4 formula of VP, 3 formula of PP and 1 formula of CP. The study may help people to solving problem especially in syntactic analysis. Hopefully this study can add knowledge about syntactic analysis especially in tree diagram.
