Abstract :
This research aimed to determine the error made by second-semester
students of the English study program in pronouncing English vowels. The
background of this research was that some students had difficulties pronouncing
English words correctly. There were some causes of the student?s problems, such
as English not being their mother tongue, so they did not use English in their daily
communication.
The sample of this research was the second-semester students of the English
study program. Twenty-five representatives participated in this research, and the
instrument used in this research was a pronunciation test. There were 20 English
vowel sounds given in the test.
In long vowel sounds, the researcher found that the students made 496
pronunciation errors; meanwhile, for long short vowel sounds, the researcher
found that the students made 267 pronunciation errors. From 60 words given in
the test, the researcher found that the average result of students? pronunciation
was: there were 15 words (25%) were pronounced more than half accurately,
there were 25 words (41,6%) were pronounced in half accurately, and there were
20 words (33,3%) were pronounced in less than half accurate level.
