Abstract :
This study discusses about the illegal business activities carried out by the character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. The focus of this research is to examine the representation of the Gilded Age era in The Great Gatsby novel through the similarity of the socio-economic conditions of the society. In analyzing this work, the author uses the theory of sociology in literature from Alan Singewood with sociological approach. The author also uses qualitative and library research as the method of this research. The results obtained from this study are that there are similarities in the socio-economic conditions of the Gilded Age era with the socio-economic conditions in the novel which can be seen from the occurrences of illegal business activities including bootlegging alcohol, drug business, and deception in business.
