Abstract :
Friction stir welding is a welding process that utilizes heat by friction
between the tool and the base metal, and the plastic deformation of the base metal
is caused by stirring the tool. The selection of material tools and determining the
tilt tools are important parameters in the friction stir welding process. This research
was conducted to determine the results of the friction stir welding joint strength,
where the welding joint results will be carried out a macro structure photo process
to know the friction stir welding zone.
The method of joining the material is carried out by the friction stir welding
process using stainless steel tools and the tools tilt angle is 0°, 3° and 6°, with plate?shaped specimens. After the friction stir welding process is carried out, the next
step is making a tensile test specimen based on ASTM E8/E8M-09. Then tensile
testing is performed to know the strength results of the welding joint and taking
photograph of macro structure to know the friction stir welding zone.
In this research the highest friction stir welding joint strength results with a
6° tilt angle variation, with an average value of ultimate tensile strength of 238,665
MPa. While the average value of ultimate tensile strength with a tilt angle variation
of 3° is 199,311 MPa. While the value ultimate tensile strength with a tilt angle
variation of 0° only has one specimen is 30,305 MPa. The resulting zones in the
friction stir welding process are unaffected zone, thermomechanically affected zone
and weld nugget.
