Abstract :
Diseases can be transmitted indirectly through food that enters the body such
as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, worms, typhoid, and hepatitis. The lazy habit of
washing hands and the incompatibility of hand sanitizers containing chemicals that
cause a burning feeling on the skin may trigger the spread of bacteria and viruses
from and through the hands to enter the digestive tract by food that is handled and
cause disease in humans. Hand sanitizer is an instant health product that can be used
to inhibit and kill germs without the need for air, without rinsing, and can be used
anytime and anywhere. almost all brands and types of hand sanitizers contain
alcohol and triclosan as the main ingredients. Alcohol alone can dry out your hands.
Therefore, there is a need for new innovations in the form of non-alcoholic hand
sanitizers that are made from natural ingredients and do not cause a burning
sensation on the skin. Natural ingredients that can be combined to be developed
into non-alcoholic hand sanitizers are basil leaves and lime leaves. The purpose of
this study was to determine the decrease in the number of germs on the palms before
and after the use of a non-alcoholic hand sanitizer, a combination of essential oils
of basil and lime leaves. Testing of hand sanitizers from a combination of natural
ingredients in reducing the number of germs on the palms with the pre-test and posttest control methods. The results of the calculation of the decrease in bacterial
colonies obtained an average formula 1 of 24.16%, formula 2 of 38.41%, and
formula 3 of 43.13%. The data above concludes that the most optimal formula to
reduce the number of hand germs is formula 3 with a ratio of active ingredients of
essential oils of basil and citrus leaves of 10%: 5%. The factors that cause the
number of germs on the hands can be caused by the activities of different
respondents, while the factors that affect the size of the decrease in germs can be
caused by the high and low antibacterial content of each active substance used.
